Castle Carrock . . . a beautiful Cumbrian village in the North Pennines

The Village Radio Programme

Beginning in September 1987, over six consecutive Saturday evenings, a series called simply “The Village” was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 10.15pm.

The programmes were made by David Bean – and they were simply a profile of a “typical” English village.

The village chosen was Castle Carrock.

The programmes – each lasting 15 minutes – covered things like the carnival, the parish council, the role of the church, the school, the WI and the two pubs.

Whether you’ve lived in the village all your life or have recently moved here, you might well recognise some of the characters and voices who feature.

We’ve tracked down recordings of the programmes (thanks to Brian and Marian Edmundson) and have uploaded all six onto the website – we hope you’ll enjoy listening to them.
