Lowther Castle and Gardens is just off the A6 near Penrith. The Castle is currently undergoing restoration after it nearly fell down about a decade ago. The gardens are based on a 17th century layout and have secret summerhouses and hidden ponds. In addition they are being maintained with the intention of promoting the local wildlife. So you might just see a red squirrel or two!
The Castle and Gardens also has a café which caters for light lunches, tea, coffee, scones and cake.
